Anger to Empathy

IndiBlogger Badge

It is believed 'natural' for people
to expect others to live by 'their values'
to behave as per 'their expectations'
and if this does not happen
it is 'natural' to be angry

If one can understand, realize
that even if living in same house
people have had different experiences
going long way back to even past lives
that moulded their present
different perspective and behaviour,
one would no longer be angry....

One then moves from anger,
condemnation. being upset
to acceptance and empathy
A change in thought, perception
is all it takes to move
from anger to empathy...

Captivating Lines from Here and There-16

Let us ring in the new year with some inspiring thoughts, particularly from Anita Moorjani who had a Near death experience(NDE) and shared her learning in the book "Dying to be Me".
  • The next time your core beliefs are challenged, try being curious instead of furious - Randy Gage, Author & motivational speaker
  • Patience is not the ability to wait but the ability to keep a good attitude while waiting- Marshall Goldsmith, Author & leadership coach
  • The areas of your life that are abundant and wonderful are where you have used gratitude and are experiencing the magic as a result. any areas that are not abundant and wonderful are due to a lack of gratitude- Rhonda Byrne, Author
  • Anger speaks about the past and then attacks the person. Assertiveness speaks about the behaviour and what needs to be done in the future- Sister Shivani, Brahmakumaris
  • The most important thing is to be ourselves- Anita Moorjani (AM), Author
  • Avoid fear like the plague- fear of not being good enough, of sickness or whatever. Live your life fearlessly- AM
  • Self love and self respect is the key- AM
  • It is okay to be different, There is nothing wrong with you.You are meant to be unique.- AM
  • Competition comes from fear. So it should be a no-no in schools- AM
  • It seemed important to have fun and laugh. I felt a lightness that was completely new, and I laughed easily. I enjoyed the company of those who wanted to do the same-  AM ( after NDE)
  • As I am at the center of my cosmic web, the whole is affected by me.If I am happy, the universe is happy. If I love myself, everyone else will love me. If I am at peace, all of creation is peaceful and so on- AM
  • I understood that true joy and happiness could only be found by loving myself- Going inward, following my heart and doing what brought me joy.

Facade

IndiBlogger Badge

Whether happy or not inside
there is this obsession these days
to convince, get the other guy to believe
that one is on a roll
and that all areas of one's life
are picture perfect!

If you are happy, you are happy
does it matter what people around think?
or do you get a kick out of
seeing him/her wide eyed, envious?

Oh, of what use are such intense efforts
of play acting, ever smiling, holidaying
not for self, but for others' sake
what is the point if one is
feeling empty and  hollow inside?

Smile

In the seventies, I read in the papers
of tourists visiting India
expressing shock and surprise
at Indians being so different
from what they had imagined

Coming from the first world
they expected people living
in a poor third world country
to be somber, grim, with
worry writ faces....

How is it that so many
on the streets are smiling?
little children having fun
playing happily in the bylanes?

Today, people are a lot richer
aspirational.moving ahead
many still seem to be smiling
but are their smiles
reaching their eyes....?

Praise

IndiBlogger Badge
When people praise you to the skies
be aware, they could withdraw it
at any moment of their choice
and the higher the flight
the steeper the fall,
and the thud afterwards!

Equanimity in handling
bouquets and brickbats
an indifference to both
is the key to happiness and peace...

Little Acts of Kindness

IndiBlogger Badge
The little things in life
over the years
a smile here, some encouragement there
a slight here, an insult there
all add up to what life is today!

Often though, little acts that caused pain
are long remembered, while
the little acts of kindness
tend to be forgotten....

A switch in approach
recalling little acts of kindness
frequently, consistently, gratefully
and checking oneself from lingering on,
erasing bad memories when they pop up
is a sure way  to happiness, and peace!

In Search of Peace

IndiBlogger Badge
Peace, peace, peace
man in search of peace
here, there,everywhere
like one searching for his gold chain
even while wearing it!

Man searches in vain
for the elusive peace
groping in the dark
running from pillar to post
frantically,desperately....

while all the while
it was available
already there
deep within him!

Men of the world

IndiBlogger Badge

Amaravati Poetic Prism 2017 ( International Multilingual poetic Meet) was organized by the cultural centre of Vijayawada & Amaravati on 11th & 12th November 2017 at Vijayawada. This poem was recited by me on the occasion.

I will scratch your back
you scratch mine
together we will scratch many more
become rich, successful and famous!

Else we will be end up like Chandrababu
the Tamil film comedian, satirist
who sang “don’t know what this world’s about
something is happening. Oh, It’s a mystery…
don’t know what this world’s about….”

So come friend, hesitate not
the sky is the limit
for the world savvy
the sensible, intelligent beings
who know and play
by the rules of the game!

Dancing in the Rain

Dancing in the rain
is possible only if one is
not having a lot on the mind
not weighed down by heavy thoughts...

"so much work to be got done..
"'the dinner to be prepared.."
sometimes it is doubts and apprehensions
"Dancing at my age and in the rain at that ?..."

It is all about the moment
the miseries and doubts can wait
but not the moment
while the analysing, debating is going on
the rain comes and goes..
waiting for none!

So, if you want to dance in the rain
there is no choice....
you simply have to live in the now
just live in the  present!

A Lesson Beyond the Subject

IndiBlogger Badge

During the journey,
the ups and downs of life
I remembered, still remember
our English literature teacher at school
who taught us the distinction
between "calling attention" and "drawing attention"

"Calling attention" is relatively easy
use loud and colourful language
or even loud clothes, body movements
and presto, you have achieved your goal!

"Drawing attention" is a
different ball game altogether
it is a result of long term efforts
years of character building
developing personality, maturity,
and equanimity from the inside

As a parting shot, the teacher had declared
"Never call attention to yourself"
instead focus always on " Drawing attention" !

Judgement

IndiBlogger Badge

You may think, he hardly speaks,
interacts with people or that
she remains silent most of the time.. and so
"He is arrogant. She is vain"
Both may infact just be plain shy....

You may think that fellow never spends money
"Such a kanjoos, a despicable miser..."
He may be what he is
because of a difficult childhood

Relax....pause, count one to ten
before you pull that judgement trigger!

Divorce

To my mind, the "agree or disagree" question, in the proposition appears to be  knave, insensitive or both. .Of course divorce affects! It is not something that is debatable.Divorce affects a child badly and leaves scars on him/her for a life time. When even eating something that does not agree with one's body affects a child physically and mentally; what can be said of a matter that culminates in having to choose one parent over the other, listening to barbs of relatives and friends, emotional blackmailing by the parent with whom the child lives etc.It is a wonder and big achievement that the child is even able to restore normalcy and go on with life in the mainstream.

The small mercies today, is that in the present times there are more divorces, so a small child is atleast able to comprehend to some extent as to what is happening. There are more discussions on the subject today  on TV and he/she can find other kids going through similar trauma, pain and feelings of inadequacy. What if the divorce happened in the sixties? The plight of the child would have been a lot worse.

Divorces could adversely affect children to such an extent that the child who was in the top rung in performance at school slips to the bottom half. His personality could change from being docile to aggressive or from an extrovert to an introvert, completely withdrawing into his shell. The child avoids social situations in order to avoid embarrassing questions from every Tom, Dick and Harry. If the child lives with the mother even a nuetral everyday question like " What is your father?"can be uncomfortable and painful ( atleast to the child of the earlier era). The child may resort to binge eating to compensate for the emotional problems ending up over weight or become under weight losing all interest in food and life in general.

Given the present lifestyles and life priorities, divorce may become inevitable in some cases when living together becomes a  psychological,/physical torture and the divorce may be in the interests of the children as well. However, the divorce decision should not be taken casually or in a  frivolous manner by the two adults without giving due consideration to the physical, emotional and social impact on the little ones. Infact I had written a poem echoing these sentiments some time back in Malayalam with an English translation-"We want you Both". Readers may like to visit there, clicking this link....

Detachment

IndiBlogger Badge

In spirituality, when we're told
to be detached from day to day living
it doesn't mean, detached from people
or even detached from circumstances
it only means detached from
the influence of circumstances...

If overwhelmed by circumstances
one cannot  play role effectively
whether the circumstance be
dissatisfaction with / loss of job
loss of loved one or separation
it is being detached, that gives clarity
for taking next step
facing situation courageously!

Even in a play on stage
if a co-actor forgets his lines
it is not raving & ranting
finding fault, that will save the day

Being calm and detached
focusing on one's own script
not being overwhelmed by circumstances
retrieves situation, restores balance
it is detachment that shows the way!

Women Issues

IndiBlogger Badge

If the proof of the pudding is in the eating
then the recent media attention
hue and cry, breast beating
has done little to change
the plight of women, who
continue to be gang raped
tortured for dowry, ill treated
not only by the other, but her own sex!

Back to the basics
is what’s most important
starting from school and the home
inculcating values of respect,
equality and concern
for all living beings, particularly women

Else all this negative tom-toming
will only encourage more negative behaviour
and raise TRP ratings of TV channels
that would only be happy for more stories!
the juicier, the better!

Imposters

IndiBlogger Badge

"The nation wants to know
why there are no real role models any more?"
they seem to have disppeared with
the death of those who fought for independance
where are the real heroes, the ones
with bravery, integrity, grit and determination?

Today, we have only the imposters
caricatures of the real men & women
those who imitate, make a lot of noise
but then cats,no matter what they do
can hardly become lions .. or can they?...

Environment Issues

IndiBlogger Badge

The little kid was aghast
"You ate, drank, made merry
wasted precious gas, water, power
raped the forests, shook the balance
now want us to make amends
and pay the price! ”

“You are right son” sighed the environ activist
“We are a failed generation
that destroyed and lived
without a care for future generations.”

 “Alas, now there’s no choice
but to work hard on reversing trend
else flora and fauna, life as we have known it
will disappear for ever
from the face of this planet….

A Landmark to Cherish ( 10 Years of Guntur International Poetry Festival)

IndiBlogger Badge

From the passion and love for poetry
of two enthusiastic teachers
Prof Gopichand and Prof Nagasuseela
of the English language department
of JKC college Guntur was born

the concept of an International poetry fest
that would soon become a feather in the cap
of not only the JKC college but
the entire town of Guntur!

The seed grew, became a reality and bloomed
with the blessings of the college management
the enthusiasm of of student volunteers
and active participation of poets who
simply love the Guntur fest for
its energy and dedication of organizors!

In all of ten years, the basic theme
that reverberated was that of peace
and its variants of love, hope, happiness
The first anthology " Heart Throbs" in 2008
to "Symphony of Peace" in 2017
adorned poets from all parts of India
and poets from Europe, US, Asia and Africa!

This is a trtibute from a fortunate me
who experienced first hand and witnessed
the unique traditional honouring of poets
the confidence building of students and
the core spirit, vitality and hospitality
of the Guntur International poetry fest!

Although this landmark of ten years
is no mean achievement, one prays
for many more laurels for a concept
that took shape for the sheer passion
for the love of poetry!

Oh for some breath of fresh air....

IndiBlogger Badge

I am Kannan. I live with my parents, my sister Alamelu and grandparents in our big house with a wonderful courtyard. Elders tell us that we had two more brothers and a sister who died due to an epidemic, even before we were born .We love our Town Vellore; we have lovely lakes and a calm serene atmosphere. We are proud that our father is serving as an official in the administration of our king, Nawab of Carnatic.

My sister and I go to the best school in town in the present times (1685). I study in 7th and my sister in 5th class. Our best friend is Kumaran who has come to our town only six months back. His father was working in the big city of Chennai under British administration and Kumaran is always telling us of the exciting life in the city. His father is interested in making new things. Kumaran told us that he wants to make a machine that will make small objects look bigger! He is also trying to make flying machines. All this sounds so exciting! That is why we spend a lot of our free time with Kumaran.

Our house may not be as big as that of Kumaran’s.But we are very proud and happy to live in it. With tall ceilings and huge windows in every room, we get plenty of air and sunlight. We have lot of trees and plants around the house. Every day, we wake up to the happy twittering of birds. Our servants clean and wet mop all the rooms daily and keep them free of dust.

In Kumaran’s house, his father has a big separate room for his experiments. Whenever we visit, we secretly enter this room when his father is not there. The kind of things that lie around there is fascinating. One Sunday when we visited Kumaran, he said that his father was working on a secret machine called “Time machine” by which we can travel from one time zone to another. We did not know fully what this was all about but when we saw the machine, we, Alamelu, Kumaran and I could not help sitting inside it and fiddling with the knobs.

Suddenly there was a hissing sound and the machine started shaking violently. Now, we were very scared and started calling out to each other “Alamelu! Kumaran!”, “ Kanna…”  “Anna!”  Before we knew it, we were in a strange place, so different from our lovely town Vellore. There was so much of smoke everywhere with motor cars swishing past. We have never seen so many cars together in our lives! We ran and ran, away from the streets and entered a house, which was in a very tall building, so different from the houses in our town. Two boys stared at us as we came in. They were wearing some sort of masks.

                                     Courtesy: Free Google Images

“What is this?” we asked in English, as they did not seem to know Tamil. Fortunately, they understood English and replied that it was worn to protect from all sorts of air and dust pollution. One of them ran inside and brought masks for us as well. I looked at a calendar on the wall, which showed the year as 2030. We asked the boys where we were and they answered “Bengaluru”. The boys said their parents have gone out and will return only in the evening.

Akhil and Aditya were very kind and gave us a lot of food to eat, so different from our usual meal. Yet we felt stifled in the place that had a suffocating atmosphere. When we asked Aditya and Akhil about it, they said that all kinds of gases are in the house such as fine particles and Carbon monoxide – an odourless, colourless gas produced by appliances or heaters. Earlier their father used to be a chain smoker and that was a big cause for the problem.

The atmosphere affected their mother who was an asthma patient, the most. “Now father has completely given up smoking,” they said.
The boys said that the family has taken steps to improve the ventilation in the house, particularly in the kitchen. They are using dehumidifiers to reduce moisture and encasing their pillows, mattresses, and box springs in dust-mite-proof covers.

All of a sudden, the knobs of our time machine became visible and three of us started hitting and turning them frantically - Lo and behold, we began to shake violently and  we set off once again. We hardly had time to  bid adieu to our new friends. The three of us were praying hard to be back in our good old town with its pleasing and healthy environment.

But sadly our prayers seem to have fallen on deaf ears. We did not know the place that looked completely different from our own town. We could hear people speaking but could not understand a word. Once again, we ran into the nearest house. There was an aunty inside who asked us questions that we did not understand. She also could not understand fully what we were speaking.

Finally, she called out to her daughters who came and spoke to us in English. “Today is a holiday. We are celebrating the 70th Independence day of our country.” they said. “Normally we go to our school, Maharishi Vidya Mandir, Bhopal for the function; but today we are not going since my sister Arthi is not well said the elder one Mithali. “Instead today we will watch the PM speak from the red fort on TV.”

We liked interacting with the sweet girls who were more or less of our age. Just then, I noticed an ashtray on the teapoy. I thought it right to forewarn the family of what is going to happen in the future. The three of us, Alamelu, Kumaran and I excitedly shared the tips given by our friends of the 2030 era to combat indoor pollutants. After all, if they take preventive steps in 2017, many problems can be avoided in the future.

The girls were happy to receive the tips and thanked us.” We are lucky though that recently the Asian Paints company has come out with a product that arrest indoor pollution. Our father has already decided to but it!” said Arthi. . Mithali  further explained, “Royale Atmos is a paint that reduces harmful air pollutants and makes the air cleaner. It also absorbs various foul smells & makes the air fresher. We were happy for these kids who had access to a product that helps to purify the air and improve the air quality inside the house. They are so lucky compared to Akhil and Aditya!

At that time the knobs of our time machine were once again visible. The three of us made a grab for it and in seconds, we started shaking violently and in a few more seconds we were back in the study of Kumaran’s father. Notwithstanding our adventure, we were relieved to be back home. We vowed to never again play or fiddle with the gadgets in uncle’s lab. We are grateful to be back in our peaceful, healthy and serene town; thankful to be living in our era….

Do you Know your History?

Viral video of an Oxford university debate
featuring eloquent Indian MP, Shashi Tharoor
is causing shock and surprise
amongst the young British
at a time when they are set
to celebrate the glory, the 150th aniversary,
of the British colonialisation,
come November 2017....

" We never knew, were never told
this side of the story either in school
or in daily casual conversation"

Perhaps the details of history and statistics
would be equally surprising to the Indian youth
some of whom believe that the railways,
the infrastructure and the modern civilization
all emanated from the contribution
the kindnes of the white man!

Pride in what and where we were
visavis other nations and civilizations,
prior to the loot and plunder
is the starting point for rekindling spirits,
for regaining past glory

The first step then is to know the truth
and pass on the truth
to the present & future generations
let our history texts focus
less on might of invaders
and more on Indian culture
and her innnate strenghts

Placing mother India back
in her rightful place
among the comity of nations
is a challenge that beckons

Knowing true, correct history
is the need of the hour!

Some thoughts on the Movie " Bareilly Ki Barfi"

I recently wrote a poetic review of the Hindi movie " Mubarakan" with the title " Never a dull moment". I had enjoyed a Hindi movie after a long time and felt compelled to share the good news. Most Hindi movies have fist fighting macho heroes with the heroine not having much to do except gyrating to loud music/ noise wearing skimpy clothes. Hence, there was no way I expected to see another good Hindi movie in a short span from one another.

Yet the unexpected happened when I got to see today, a heroine oriented movie "Bareilly Ki Barfi" that had no super stars or the typical item numbers. The story is set in a small town Bareilly. However, the heroine, Bitty Mishra is a girl with a mind of her own who likes to live life on her terms. This means she is not getting a suitable match; groom who likes her ways or her being able to meet their expectations as prospective grooms. Finally, she comes across two persons who both seemingly like the 'real Bitty". But who is the one for her?

I will not reveal more and spoil the fun. I would like the readers to watch this free flowing, entertaining movie in a theatre and find out for themselves.

Suffice it to say that  all the characters are played competently by the cast whether, Kriti Sanon as Bitti Mishra. Ayushman Khurranna as Chirag Dubey, his friends played by Rajkumar Rao and Rohit Chaudhary or the parents of the girl (Pankaj Tripathi and Seema Bhargava), Bitty's friend Rama by Swati Semwal. Time and again, Rajkumar Rao has proved that he is a good performer who is willing to take any role irrespective of whether there is a 'Hero' tag attached to it.He has  proved it  once again in this film. Kriti Sanon in the title role is impressive as she slips into the role effortlessly, while Ayushman Khurranna is also quietly effective.

Movies like "Bareilly Ki Barfi"  come as a breath of  fresh air and I could see the smiles and happiness on the faces of  the audience while leaving the theatre. It is a big thumb- up sign from me for this 'paisa vasool' and more movie!

Denial

'Denial' merely evades a problem
its still there; hardly solved
denial merely defers action,
courts procrastination...

Some fool themselves for years
while others live the lie for a lifetime!

Denial of an alcoholic problem
of being overweight;
of being ignorant/ not knowing something
or of having marital issues
only steals the opportunity
to face, confront, respond to the problem

Denying, getting angry
shooting the messenger
seeing well wishers as enemies etc
takes one no where
Acceptance is the key
the first step, that makes possible
introspection, ,action and possible solutions....

Never a Dull Moment ( Movie Review of Mubarakan)

Time simply flew watching this movie
and my verdict "It is Hilarious all the way!"
Twins, girl friends, chachas, mamas
Mausis all thrown in with a wedding background
the perfect fun setting for pure old time, Hindi cinema!

For a change, light hearted characters
are in safe competent hands
whether that of seniors like Anil Kapoor,
Ratna Shah, Pawan Malhotra
Or the youngsters, Arjun Kapoor or Ileana D'Cruz

The twists and turns and tying up of loose ends
all done perfectly as in the golden days
when values counted, feelings of elders mattered
and winning/Getting was not any which way!

Ignore the professional critics for once
and join in  the fun ride with Arjun
who is getting better n better by the day…
if  Anil is able to fill screen with equal impact
it is good for the movie, so different from
the dominance of single macho heroes these days….

Many thanks to Aneez Bazmee, the Director
to the story cum screenplay writers-
Balwinder, Rupinder and Gurmeet
for the  sheer fun, relaxation and entertainment
to cherish for a long long time!

Drowned

Country is dominated today
by strong right wing views
and retaliation by those at the other end
with extreme views of their own.... policy is
totally disagree with what the other articulates

The real need is saner, sober, balanced voices
which sadly get drowned in the din
generated by those who insist on ' black' or 'white'
with no place for the grey
for them it is simply " either you are with them
or with us, decide quickly, you cat on the wall..."

Communication

" You know, you know" you say
after almost every sentence
am I a mind reader that I should know
even before you have spoken?

Cut out the frills like the many
"I think, I think s",fake accents,
repeating same word many times for style
and you will get to me faster and clearer,
believe me, there's merit in simplicity....

Captivating Lines from Here and There-17

  • Anytime you are unhappy in the present or feeling unsuccessful, it is time to learn from the past or plan for the future- What happened in the past? what did I learn from it? What can I do differently now?
  • When you behave in the same way, you get the same results.
  • To keep our dreams alive, we must keep feeding them with our thoughts and actions. When you focus a lot of attention on something for a prolonged period of time, you create a lots of results in that area.
  • HR professionals need to spend less time on what they are good at and more on what they can do to help others succeed.
  • Ask yourself: What is my purpose right now? and what am I doing to make it a reality? As for example " Is my purpose at the moment achievement of sales quota or serving my customers' needs?"
  • Stress is caused by being 'here' but wanting to be ' there' or being in the present but wanting to be in the future.
  • Planning gives you a road map.It lets you focus on what you need to do in the present/ each day to help bring about the future you want.
  • With negative emotions in the work front, instead of producing results, we become busy managing negative emotions with people- Keeping internal accounts and settling scores with each other. Stop the leakage of energies that occur due to negative emotions.
  • Forgiveness is to relinquish your grievance and thus let go of grief.Your grievance serves no purpose except to strengthen false sense of self.
  • To do what you love and love what you do is being creative.

A Thin Line between...

There is a thin line between poverty and prosperity; between sanity and insanity, between being witty and being hurting/insulting and yes between perfect health and ill health. You could be a very rich man on one day and be on the street the next day due to an unexpected financial calamity. Similarly, we cannot take our health for granted. We may be seemingly doing appropriate physical exercise and eating sensibly and yet be struck by a health issue from out of the blue.

It happened to me. I was enjoying fairly good health except for a mild diabetes that was well under control. It is true that recently there were some changes in my life style after being  drawn to spirituality. This included getting up very early in the morning at 4 AM for meditation and then going for classes daily for one and half hours. I gave up my morning walk but felt that this was  being compensated by the walk to the venue of spiritual class. I also turned vegetarian.  I got less sleep as I was not able to go to bed early to balance for the early rising.

Perhaps I did not realize it,when signs of ill health were showing up. I felt very sleepy during the morning classes but attributed it to loss of sleep. Yet,slowly and steadily I noticed that I was becoming lethargic, getting very tired and feeling depressed. I was not able to concentrate; not even enough to write my blogs. Most of the time I just felt like lying down. At this juncture, I got a thorough master check up done  at the Apollo clinic. As nothing much could be revealed from it, except a moderate rise in fasting blood sugar, the doctor made changes to this medicine. However, my condition did not improve and  I sought help from an Ayurvedic doctor. This doctor apart from giving general tonic like medicines, suggested that I check for thyroid as well as it could be the cause of the symptoms. By now, I was hoping earnestly that this test brings out something abnormal so that I can at least take medicines to address the basic problem. But the results turned out to be negative.

As I continued to suffer from fatigue and back pain, I consulted another doctor who suggested tests for vitamin B12 and vitamin D deficiency. This time finally, the culprit was identified. I had vitamin D deficiency. Older people and women are more likely to suffer from this deficiency. Exposure to sunlight is a natural source of vitamin DAccording to a  pan-India study, the best time to get exposed to the sun is between 11 AM and 1 PM.since the wavelength of ultraviolet B (UVB) rays is 290-320 nm during this period which is essential for skin to make vitamin D. About 40% women and 30% men in India develop vitamin D-induced osteoporosis, a condition that causes bones to become weak and brittle. Experts say going outside for 10 minutes in the midday sun—in shorts and a tank top with no sunscreen—will give you enough radiation to produce about 10,000 international units of the vitamin.

The study also suggested that winter months, in view of decreased sunshine, may make Indians more prone to vitamin D deficiency . Natural production of vitamin D from one's own skin is definitely better than having to depend on pills . Vitamin D is the only vitamin that the human body can make on its own which helps the body to absorb calcium from diet. Calcium is important for healthy bones and teeth.Parents should get their children tested for vitamin D deficiency if the child seems lethargic, fatigued, depressed, easily falls sick or takes longer than usual to recover from injuries.Natural foods high in vitamin D include fish oils, fatty fish like tuna/ salmon/ mackerel, mushrooms, beef liver, cheese, and egg yolks.

There is also the option of including supplements and vitamin D  fortified foods in your diet. Malted drinks like Bournvita also contains the recommended amount of vitamin D. Excess sugar, caffeine, alcohol interfere with the normal metabolism of the vitamin and should therefore be consumed minimally to enhance absorption of the vitamin. Healthy fat (such as that available in nuts, seeds sunflower/ flax seed and seed oils, pure ghee)  should be incorporated in the diet to improve vitamin D absorption,"

As I had the deficiency for some time now I was prescribed Uprise-D capsules that are to be taken once a week for eight weeks. I have now taken three of these capsules and exposing myself to the sun. I am feeling better now. The aim of this post is to educate readers of this malady that may strike unexpectedly if we are not prepared. As for me, I hope to become my old self by the completion of the treatment course....

Indian Democracy

IndiBlogger Badge

What can people do in a democracy
if asked to choose
between the devil and the deep sea?

Voters' plight remain the same
whether living in the eastern part
or western part of country
or  God's own country...

So  corruption of previous regime
and other problems don't go away
they merely take new forms & colour
as example, look at the irony
in God's own country...

The red flags bat today
for the land mafia, resort owners and
private college barons, condoning
even killings of vested interests...

The martyrs of the movement,
the founding fathers
shocked by present day party men
must be turning in their graves...

PS: (1 )Link to the poem I had written on the activities of the previous regime - http://rajeevianlinesandverses.blogspot.in/2015/04/shameless.html
(2) Latest reports from a major state in the country show on audio tape a criminal don speaking on telephone from prison to a key politician of the Government directing him to take action/ show the Government official ( Block development officer, Police officer) his place. The politician assures him of full support!

Captivating Lines from Here and There-16

  • Law of the garbage truck: Many people are like garbage trucks. They run around full of garbage- full of frustration, full of anger and full of disappointment. As their garbage piles up, they need a place to dump it. If they happen to dump it on you, don't take it personally. You just smile, wave, wish them well and move on. You will be happier you did that rather than fight them.

Instead they should say okay, this is what we agreed on, so let's start working on this. What we don't agree on we will resolve as we go along. For things to move forward, it is important to work on the agreed upon aspects and not get bogged down in the areas of disagreement- Sam Pitroda, telecom inventor, entrepreneur, and policy maker.

Proof of the Pudding

IndiBlogger Badge

Proof of the pudding
is in the eating...
so no point telling the other person
"how can you not like my pudding?
I have put the best possible ingredients
of first rate quality
so you jolly well like it!"
The fact is he doesn't like it- period!

The same goes for abuses
“I didn't mean it-  in our village/ elite circles
this type of language is common
and not held offensive
so don't be offended
in fact, you have no right
to be offended!

If you are feeding someone
your tastes are immaterial, so…
If he doesn’t care for your alluring desert
doesn’t deserve it, preferring the ordinary rice gruel
so be it!

The proof of the pudding is in the eating...

Rivals for Life

Pandu and Rangu
siblings from the same womb
yet so different from each other...

Rangu, the younger one
was always engaged
in pleasing others

He saw life as a competition
wanted to be loved
cared and regarded
more than brother

So there he was
tailing aunts on shopping sprees
seeing off relatives
at rail stations and airports
and it even looked that
he had an edge over brother in
the self proclaimed popularity contest

Years later though
Rangu was bitter...
felt he was used
by the people from whom
he expected lifelong loyalty

Pandu on the other hand
participated with relatives
only in the activities
he liked, enjoyed..
he had no expectations
whether from relatives or friends
after all, he had done his own thing
nothing to please or
get something in return...

Many years passed
both of them married
the brothers came
face to face
less and less...

Pandu found that
on his visits to parents
Ranga was never there...
he met him at the odd wedding
and that was about it,,,

Yet, finally the brothers met again
on occasion of dad's illness
sharing space in same house
for few days when old wounds
reopened, hostilities rekindled...

In a verbal spat  though
Pandu was shocked
by words of sibling...
he knew he wasn't liked
but not that he was hated so much!

"I hate everything about you"
your singing, your very personality
your pseudo meditation!" quipped Rangu
"How I planned meticulously
stayed away when you visited
and now I am forced to breathe
the same polluted air, you breathe!"

Pandu was shaken, hadn't reckoned
that so much of animosity
venom, was building against him
all his hope of a patch up
at least a working relationship
was dashed, broken to a million pieces

It was now clear, that they were destined
to be rivals , a rivalry doomed
to be carried to their graves...

Balance Sheet of Life

In an earlier post I had written about the back to back talks that Sister Shivani of Brahmakumaris gave for the benefit of the citizens during her visit to Bangalore. On 5th February she spoke on "celebrating life" the gist of which was covered in my blog dated 14-2- 2017 (  http://rajeevianlinesandverses.blogspot.in/2017/02/celebrating-life.html  ). Although I was not physically present at the talk given on 4th February when the subject of this post was discussed, I watched it live while it was streamed on you tube and took down notes for writing this post.

Events happen in our lives based on our Karma or past actions either in this or previous lives. It is all about balancing out the good and bad deeds in the "Balance sheet of life." Often people tend to blame God for whatever negative things that happen in their lives. Yet God never writes a bad destiny for any of his children. Even in our worldly life, no parent wishes bad things for his or her child. What this means is that we are solely responsible for everything that happens to us. This does not suggest that we have to be fatalistic and resign ourselves to a doomed future.

A person approaching a doctor is told after a thorough investigation "Based on your present lifestyle, you are likely to get diabetes in the next six months." Now it is left to the individual concerned to respond to the situation, He may say to himself "Oh, I am going to a diabetic anyway given my life circumstances-I have so much of stress at work. I have no personal time for myself. My life is a struggle and now diabetes is inevitable...." His constant thoughts of worry and despair could result in the diabetes happening in three months as against the prediction of six months.

The second or alternative option for the individual is to tell himself "I am on the borderline just now.I need to change my life style and become fit" If  he takes action accordingly, he may not get diabetes at all. The prediction was made based on the day's lifestyle and if precautionary steps are taken, the prediction could prove wrong. The same is the case with your Sanskars ( read earlier article for an explanation of the term), habits and personality traits. Horoscope is written as on the first day of birth based on the sanskars that the soul has carried. As most of the souls do not work on their sanskars, the horoscope is accurate in their cases. They have not made any changes to the accumulated sanskars based on which the prediction was based.

If however a person works and changes the sanskars, then the document of the horoscope is not valid for him. This would also mean that in respect of  people who  came in to this birth with some original good sanskars, but altered them negatively during the course of the present life also, the horoscopes would not be valid. Ask yourself “How do I want my next year to be? In fact, it would be worthwhile to ask oneself each morning “What kind of day do I want today?”Information is the source of thoughts. Feed yourself information of what you want and not what you don’t want. The foundation of physical health is the food that we eat. The foundation of emotional health is the food we feed the mind in the form of information.

In the last 20 years the 24x 7 news channels, entertainment channels and social media ( in the last 15 years) are generating so much of negative  information that our stress levels are steadily going up. The same is true of what’s app messages one receives the whole day. If the messages mainly contain criticism and making fun of others and you forward the same to many others, it  would have the rippling effect of the  karma of one person, becoming the karma of crores of souls and ultimately determining the quality of the society. Sister Shivani suggested that an experiment be conducted for a week when such messages are deleted without being read, and not forwarded to anyone. Do not consume anything that is not pure and positive thinking will come naturally to you.

People will serve us impure food with a lot of persuasion and love but eating or not eating it is our choice. So delete messages without reading. The speaker reiterated this aspect with a request “Even if you eat such impure food, please do not pass it on to others; it is a very deep karma that we are creating. If I do a karma that disturbs the minds of other people, I will not be able to be at peace. ”

If you want to change your sanskars, have satvik diet (thoughts) for the other souls. First, there is the thought, which is followed by karma, which in turn is followed by the consequence. Karma is not what we speak and do, alone. Karma is first what we think. Every thought, word, behaviour that one creates is karma. Today, most of us know how to think and speak differently- “I am so happy to meet you!” but internally thinking, “This joker came in at a time when I was watching a very interesting cricket match. When will he leave?” You then ask him “Will you join us for lunch?” He accepts thinking; he has invited me with so much of love how can I refuse? but you are thinking, “I offered food as a courtesy and the fellow has so quickly accepted…”

So what is the consequence of this karma? Having offered and served food, you believe that you have been a nice person, but karma in the form of  negative thoughts in the mind, result in  negative consequences and the balance sheet seems to be not tallying. What thoughts am I creating for people is the key- Thought- word- Action = Karma. Situations that are coming from outside to me (Destiny) are based on the energies that are going from me to the outside (Karma).

One’s destiny is dependent on one’s karma. If I throw a ball on a wall, it bounces back to me at the same speed. Before I release the ball, it is in my full control to decide, “How much force to exert, how to throw it, what to think, what to speak” etc. However, once the ball is out of my hands, it comes back as destiny in terms of health, people’s behaviour towards me, the ups and downs in my career etc. Yet when it comes back, I tend to complain, “Why is it coming back like this?”

If someone is insulting you publically, accept it as the result of your karma. Stop asking “Why is he doing this to me?”. A lot of energy is wasted on such thoughts. Half the problem is already solved once you understand the process of why the ball is coming back to you. Karma is between a soul and another soul and not between the dresses they are presently wearing. “If I throw a stone at you, you will throw a stone back at me. If I throw flowers at you, you will throw flowers at me.” Yet, in life, what actually happens is that “I throw stones at you and then forget about it. When it comes back later on, I ask why are you doing this to me?”

So what is the solution? If I do not like stones, then I do not send back stones. If I do so, it becomes a continuous chain of karma. So this time even if you throw stones, I will send flowers to you. Everything that is happening in all spheres is the consequence of some energy we have created earlier. Therefore, send to other people only those things you want in life; not what you don’t want. If it is love and flowers that you want in life and not hatred or jealousy, you have no choice but to send flowers. You feel good even as you send them and the act changes your present and the future.

It happens sometimes that I get stones from the other person and following the above principle, I send him flowers instead, expecting to get flowers next time. Instead, however I get bigger stones from him. Now I am upset and my reaction is “This doesn’t work! See, this is all sweet talk by these ashram people.” and proceed to dispatch stones to him. The important point to note here is that I do not know the quantity of stones that I had originally thrown at the other party which needs to be balanced before the act of throwing the flowers can take effect. While you are returning flowers for stones, remember that you are doing it for yourself (for balancing the balance sheet)  and not for others.

If a person wants to end the karmic account with another person, he will have to stop sending negative energy, meaning stop hating that person. Although he has no control over what has happened in the past, he has full control over where he wants to take it from here.In situations of being wronged, harmed or cheated by the other person, in a state of meditation, he can ask for forgiveness, then also forgive and send a message that "our karmic account is closed."If someone hates you, but you bless him/her instead, the blessing is first experienced by you. The change in the other person will depend on the power of your blessings- Are you unconsciously sending curses along with the thoughts of blessing?

The thoughts we radiate should be with full faith and conviction. When the vibration is right, the destiny simply has to be good! By understanding the balance sheet of life we can have the power to create a destiny of our choice and harmonious relationships...

the story has come full circle

Bouquets and brickbats

Life as we know it
Is a mix of happiness and sorrow
of pluses and minuses
of hopes and disappointments
of bouquets and brickbats!

To remind us of this fact
during the Indian festival, Makara Sankranti
People exchange food treats
that are both sweet and  bitter
modern man though wants only the limelight
he wants Bouquets & Bouquets alone all the time…

So even the occasional, yet inevitable
 brickbat is unnerving, unsettling
and painful enough for a
360-degree U-turn & withdrawal into one’s shell…

The better way perhaps is equanimity
in handling life, taking it casually as it comes
not unduly elated or distressed
either by the bouquets or the brickbats!

Equally in Grief (തുല്യ ദുഖിതർ )

തുല്യ  ദുഖിതർ

(Translation at the bottom..)

Translation

Raghav looked at the cat
he was in grief
he has no mate since a week

His dear she, was lost
to the wheels of a cruel vehicle...
since then he has no drive
no interest in anything
whether it is food or sleep....

A thought came to Raghav.....
"this fellow is sad in the absence of his mate
while for many years am I living
with a physical mate, yet with feelings
and net effect of  'no mate'...

though for different  reasons
both of us are equally in grief...
