Summary of the Kavyakaumudi International Multilingual Poetry Meet

The monthly meeting of the Kavyakaumudi International multilingual meet is always special. Anchored by its president Dr Kumud Bala, you get to listen to some scintillating poetry in multiple languages of India and abroad. The session at 2 PM on 19th February 2022  kicked off with the welcome by the president followed by talks by Dr Srikanth Kopuri the chief guest from Machilipatanam, Andhra Pradesh and Dr Latha Prem Sakya the guest of honour from Perumbavoor, Kerala. The former gave a spiritual perspective of the objective of poetry while the latter spoke about the Nav Naari Gunjara Motiffs and the Nava rasas that should be reflected in anything we create. 

The poets who presented include Dr Rajarajeshwari (Malay - on two Nicarguan poets), Tagline Alapatiji (multi lingual verses including Sanskrit in  single poem), Jayashree chari (Tamil- weekly market), Nivedita Roy (English- Marital conversations), Emmanuel Mettles( Malayalam- Tree & its relationship with humans), Dr Tejaswini ( Telugu- nostalgia of one's village), Manjula Asthana ( English- Melody from musical instruments)  Rajeev Moothedath (Malayalam- need to not let down our guard on Corona virus), Prasanna Bhatta (English- Little actions impacting humanity), Rashmita Barik ( Hindi- on Yauvan or youthfulness) and finally Dr Kumud Bala on the 'River' in English.   

As usual, by the time the session was over  all the participants were charged up and enthused by the sheer variety and content of the poetry in the rewarding session. I had the pleasure and Privilege of proposing a vote of thanks.  

നവ വത്സര ചിന്തകൾ

ഇരുളിന് പിറകെ തീർച്ചയായും വെളിച്ചം വരും  

മഴയ്ക്ക്  പിൻ, കാർമേഘങ്ങൾ  നീങ്ങി, ആകാശം തെളിയും 

എത്ര വല്യ കൊടുങ്കാറ്റും അവസാനം നീങ്ങി 

ശാന്തതക്കും , വ്യക്തതക്കും വഴി  തരും! 

രണ്ടു വർഷമായി തകർന്നിരിക്കുന്നു ഹ്രദയങ്ങൾ 

പല പല കാരണങ്ങൾ  - പ്രിയപെട്ടവരെ നഷ്ടപെട്ടവർ  

ജോലി , ജീവിത മാർഗം   ഇല്ലാതായവർ  

ബന്ധു മിത്രധികളിൽ നിന്നും  ദൂരെ -

വേദന, തനിമ , ഒറ്റപ്പെടൽ അനുഭവിക്കുന്നവർ  

നവ വത്സരത്തെ വരവേൽക്കുമ്പോൾ ഏവർകും 

 ഏറെ പ്രതീക്ഷ ,  ശുഭാപ്തിവിശ്വാസം, പ്രത്യാശ 

ഇനിയെങ്കിലും നല്ല നാൾ വരേണമേ എന്ന പ്രാർത്ഥന 

എങ്കിലും  , ആശയും ശുഭ പ്രതീക്ഷകളോടൊപ്പം 

കർമവും, പ്രവർത്തിയും, ഇന്ന്  അത്യന്താപേക്ഷിതം 

മാസ്കുകൾ ധരിക്കുന്നതു , അകലം പാലിക്കുന്നത് 

പൊതു സമ്മേളനങ്ങളിലേക്കുള്ള

രാഷ്ട്രീയക്കാരുടെ ക്ഷണം നിരാകരിക്കുന്നത്   

കൂട്ടുകൂടിയുള്ള പാർട്ടികൾ,  ഓഴിവാകുന്നതു,

 തീയേറ്ററിൽ സിനിമ  കാണാതിരിക്കുന്നത്

ഹോട്ടലിൽ ഭക്ഷണം കഴിക്കാതിരിക്കുന്നത്, ഇത്യാദി 

ഇത്രയും  നാൾ അച്ചടക്കം പാലിച്ച നമുക്ക് 

കുറച്ചു നാൾ കൂടി കാത്തിരിക്കാം 

അന്ധകാരത്തിന്റെ  ഉച്ചം, വെളിച്ചത്തിനു തൊട്ടു മുൻപ് എന്നല്ലേ ? 

വരും കാലം ദുരന്തമോ , ആഹ്ലാദമോ എന്ന് 

സംയമനം അഥവാ  അത് ഇല്ലായ്മ, നിശ്ചയിക്കും 

മഹാമാരി ഒന്ന് പഠിപ്പിച്ചു- നാം ഒറ്റപ്പെട്ട ദ്വീപുകളല്ലെന്ന് 

പ്രപഞ്ചത്തിലുള്ള ഏവരും  ബന്ധുക്കളെന്ന്  

ലോകത്തിൻ ഒരു  കോണിൽ അസുഖമെങ്കിൽ  

അത്, പൂർണ ഭൂഗോളത്തിന്റെ ആരോഗ്യത്തിനും 

ക്ഷേമത്തിനും ഭീഷണിയായി ഭവിക്കുമെന്ന് !

देश भक्ति क्या चीज़ है ?

क्या देश भक्ति का मतलब सिर्फ  जंग - युद्ध  लड़ाई से जुड़ा  है ?

देश के नाम ख़ून बहाना ही, देश भक्ति है क्या ?

ज़्यादा शहीद हुए देश में क्या देश भक्ति अधिक  है ,

और बाकी सभी देशों में कम ?  

अपने घर , मोहल्ला ,गाँव, शहर को 

स्वच्छ रखना, देश भक्ति नहीं है ? 

इस सवाल उन से क्या पूछे जिनके लिए 

स्वछता सीमित है अपने ही घर तक 

घर को स्वच्छ करते करते , फेंके कचड़ा रस्ते पर ! 

ईमानदारी से काम  करना 

ख़ुद का  बनाया हुआ पुल, सड़क सालों तक सलामत रहना 

पैसे से भी ज़्यादा, अपने मरीज़ का ख़याल रखना  

नेता से लेकर आम जनता  तक, भ्रष्टाचार से बचाकर रहना 

क्या यह सब देश भक्ति नहीं है ?  

समय आ गया है  देश वासियों 

नयी नयी परिभाषाओं की 

ताकि देश भक्ति केवल  युद्ध काल में नहीं 

शांति काल में भी दिखाई दे 

'देश भक्ति' शब्द  की  झलक मुँह तक नहीं 

सभी  नागरिकों के  कर्म, चाल, रहन सहन  में भी दिखाई दे !

English Translation  

What exactly is Patriotism ? ( Desh Bhakti)  

Is patriotism  associated only with battles, wars and bloodshed?

does patriotism only mean  shedding blood, dying for your country? 

would it then mean that more the number of martyrs 

the more patriotic that country?

all others are less patriotic? 

Is keeping your home, neighbourhood, village,  or town clean 

not a part of being patriotic?   

Ha, what is the point of asking this question to those

who meticulously clean their houses 

but throw garbage on to the street?   

Working with honesty, 

ensuring bridges, roads made by you survive for years

caring for your patients more than their money

from a leader to the last citizen shunning corruption

don't  all these count for patriotism?  

Time has come countrymen 

to have new definitions for words

so that patriotism is not limited to just war times

but visible and alive in peace times as well! 

So that "Patriotism" is not limited to just mouthing a word 

but ensure that it is reflected in the action, 

behaviour and living styles of  all citizens!

Language and Body Language

It is said "weaker the argument 

stronger the words" 

when your stand is so weak 

that it has no legs to stand on 

then stooping to words foul 

angry, intemperate words, becomes natural...

Yet, when the father himself

the head of the family is using such words

whatever the provocation, desperation

you know instinctively

that  the family is headed for bad times! 

A person may try to fool with words, aggressive

seemingly confident

but the body language, it never lies... 

It shows the true place 

from where the words come

whether from confidence 

or  from a place that is

scared and insecure, deep inside....
